Who?
What?
In my music video we have
decided alongside that we are going to create a narrative and
performance music video. The majority of the video will be a narrative but will
also included performance shots in order to create the false ideology of a
high budget product. The narrative included in the music video is about a
female, Jessie Lovett, recovering after a bad break up with her recent partner.
I decided to create this narrative as I thought it was extremely relatable
making it a situation where everyone in my target audience can sympathise with.
The performance scenes will fit the conventions of a typical indie/alternative
music video in order to attract my target audience. For example, the cuts will
be edited to fit the tempo of the music, lighting will be ambient but the main
focus will be on the music artist making sure she stands out - coloured
lighting will also be used in order to add contrast and make the visuals more
interesting and exciting to watch. The narrative part of the video will make
the music more relatable which will create a synthetic relationship
between the audience and the music artist and the performance part will build
up her professional persona by encouraging audience members to
take her seriously. This will help build Jessie Lovett's success and increase
her career especially within the indie/alternative industry.
Where?
I want my music video to
be authentic and realistic by having a setting that is very common in order to
make it relatable for my target audience. I plan on filming part of my
music video in a field during the daytime with natural lighting, in order to
achieve an ambient look I hope to film the shots on a sunny and dry day.
By having parts of the shots in a field it represents a vulnerable image for
the music artist, Jessie Lovett, as the target audience are able to see her
small profile in the middle of an empty setting. This makes audience members
recognise the meaning and are able to sympathise with her situation thus
finding it relatable. These shots will also be taken in the dark to emphasise
the representation of vulnerability and loneliness. This has been done due to
many people associating the dark with emptiness and unguarded
emotion which represents the message effectively which is what I want to
achieve behind the music video. This also suits the forms and conventions of a
typical indie music video at the same time. The other half of the shots will be
filmed inside with different coloured backgrounds in order to add more colour
to the sad meaning. In this setting I will keep the lighting natural in order
to make the ambient lighting from outside fit all shots and to not contrast
which would end up making the video look unprofessional and not realistic.
Clothing will be used appropriately in order to represent the style and make
the video aesthetically pleasing.
Why?
I plan on creating a
music video that has both narrative and performance. I have decided to do this
as I think both genres together fit perfectly and enables me to create an
effective music video that not only has meaning but will also connect with my
target audience. The performance was chosen in order to fit the typical forms
and conventions of a indie music video and by the music artist, Jessie Lovett,
containing eye contact throughout these scenes it will build a connection with
audience members but will also bring their attention to the song thus gaining
the artists success. For the narrative I plan on creating visuals that express
the process of an individual recovering from a bad breakup with their recent
partner. I decided to choose this story as it is highly relatable throughout
modern society for females and males to go in and out of romantic relationships
and is something everyone experiences throughout their life. This means the
music video will be suited for everyone within my target audience and won't be
directed at one specific person. I plan on highlighting the message through the
editing stages by making the visuals dark and dreary in order to emphasise the
negative emotion running through the female artist. By having a female artist
it also represents an empowering image for young girls and shows strength and
power when recovering from these hard situations.
How?
In order to show the
representations effectively I will achieve it through mise en scene, camerawork
and editing. The vulnerability of the music artist will be shown through the
lighting and positioning of the camera which will show her importance and
display her as the main focus which audience members will end up looking at.
During the outside shots a wide shot will not be used as the majority due to
Jessie Lovett having to grab audience members attention and them not focusing
on the background. By using a narrow shot I will be able to use close ups and
extreme close ups with her maintaining eye contact with the audience in order
to maintain their attention and to stand out against the setting. The editing
will be used to make the cuts fit with the tempo of the song. By doing this it
will represent the indie genre and fit the forms and conventions of a
alternative music video. To represent the empowering image of females I will
use the clothing and the positioning of the camera to make the female look sad
in parts but then strong in others. By doing this it will show the stages of an
individual going through a break up with their partner. In these parts the
camera will be lower to represent Jessie Lovett as strong and then higher to
show her weak. The clothing will change to suit these styles as well as to
represent the indie genre. This will help attract and engage the target
audience and build my music artist's success by involving the right group of
people.
